Which iPads support iPadOS 27?

iPad Pro 12.9-inch 4th generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Air 4th generation and later, iPad 9th generation and later, iPad (A16), and iPad mini 6th generation and later. Every A12 and A12X device is dropped, including the 2018 iPad Pro, iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5 and iPad 8. The 2020 iPad Pro survives because its A12Z is a separate tier.

Are the 10.2-inch and 10.5-inch iPads the same size?

Yes. Both use an identical 250.6 by 174.1 mm body. The iPad Air 3 and iPad Pro 10.5-inch simply have thinner bezels than the iPad 7 through 9, so a larger screen fits in the same footprint. The same is true of the 10.9-inch and 11-inch models, which share a 247.6 by 178.5 mm body.

When did Touch ID move to the top button on iPad?

October 2020, with the iPad Air 4. Touch ID first appeared in the home button on the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 in October 2014, and the iPad 9 in 2021 was the last iPad with a home button. Face ID has only ever appeared on iPad Pro models from 2018 onward.

Is the 8.3-inch iPad mini bigger than the 7.9-inch one?

No, it is smaller. The 8.3-inch iPad mini 6 and 7 measure 195.4 mm tall against 203.2 mm for the 7.9-inch mini 4 and 5. Apple reduced the bezels enough that the screen grew while the body shrank by 7.8 mm.

Which iPad is the best value used?

The 9th-generation iPad, typically 105 to 150 US dollars. Its A13 chip is on Apple's iPadOS 27 compatibility list, while the visually identical iPad 8 is not.

Drawn from Apple’s published dimensions, so the relative footprints are accurate. Body style reflects the bezel era — thick bezels with a home button through 2021, uniform thin bezels from the 2018 Pro onward. A bigger screen doesn’t always mean a bigger iPad: the 10.2″ and 10.5″ share one identical body, as do the 10.9″ and 11″ — the difference is bezel thickness, not size. “Released … ago” refers to when Apple first shipped that model, not to the condition of any particular unit. The four models marked Sold new are still boxed and current at Apple — the iPad mini 7 launched two years ago and is on sale today at full price. Age matters here mainly because it predicts how much software life is left, which is what the and markers track.
Used prices are ballpark figures for a good-condition Wi-Fi unit in August 2026, anchored to current Swappa marketplace listings and rounded. Treat them as a sense of scale, not a quote — condition, colour and seller move them ±20%, and cellular versions typically fetch $30–80 more. Anything from 2014 or earlier trades as a hand-me-down rather than a tablet with real resale value.
Prices are Apple's US list prices as of August 2026, after the across-the-board increase on 25 June 2026 that added roughly $100 to most iPads. Resellers frequently run $30–$150 below list.
Refurbished: Apple's Certified Refurbished store usually carries the generation immediately prior to the current one — right now that means the iPad Air M3 and iPad Pro M4 turn up regularly, and the current iPad, mini and Air appear once returns accumulate. Stock rotates daily, so treat any specific model as a maybe. Anything older than about four years is third-party used only.
"Max OS" shows the highest version each model can install. iPadOS 27 was announced at WWDC on 8 June 2026 and is in public beta now, with release expected in late 2026 — models marked are on Apple's published compatibility list for it. It drops every A12 and A12X device, so the 2018 iPad Pro, iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5 and iPad 8 all end at iPadOS 26. The lone survivor of that generation is the 2020 iPad Pro, whose A12Z squeaks through.
Touch ID and Face ID arrived late and moved around. The first seven iPads had no biometrics at all. Touch ID debuted in the home button on the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 in October 2014 and stayed there for 13 models, ending with the iPad 9 in 2021. Face ID arrived with the 2018 iPad Pro and has only ever appeared on iPad Pros — six models, and it works in any orientation, unlike on iPhone. Touch ID returned in October 2020 in the top button of the iPad Air 4, and that is what every current non-Pro iPad uses. Nothing has ever shipped with both.
Apple Pencil comes in four incompatible versions. Pencil 1 (2015) plugs into a Lightning port to pair and charge. Pencil 2 (2018) snaps to the side magnetically and adds double-tap. Pencil USB-C (2023) is the cheap one — it attaches magnetically and hovers, but has no pressure sensitivity. Pencil Pro (2024) adds squeeze, barrel roll and haptics. A model supports only the versions listed; there is no forward or backward compatibility.
The awkward case is the 10th- and 11th-gen iPad: they take Pencil 1, but since they have no Lightning port you need Apple's USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter to pair and charge it. Neither supports Pencil 2 at all.
Ports: 30-pin through 2012, Lightning from late 2012, USB-C starting with the 2018 iPad Pro. The 9th-gen iPad in 2021 was the last new Lightning iPad.
Cellular versions of every model shipped in the same capacities as their Wi-Fi counterparts.
